How did Coos County NH get its name?
Coos, with the largest area of any county in the state, was formed in 1803. Its name is derived from an Abenaki Indian word meaning “crooked,” a reference to the course of the Connecticut River. The northern half of the county, which is sparsely populated, was known as the Republic of Indian Stream in 1832–40.
